2007
Dear Friends, Thanks to you all for helping to keep this magazine going for 5 years.
Some good news for a change. The bullfights that were scheduled for the
1st and 2nd of January in Chongquing/China were once again postponed. The
bullfighters have been trying to perform these bullfights since November
of 2006 without success. Firstly they were postponed due to problems with
the bulls, secondly due to "heavy rain" (when actually it was not raining)
and the last time due to a "wave of cold weather" when in fact the
temperature was perfectly normal.
Please continue to send emails to ask MEPs to support the Written
Declaration for an EU wide ban on bullfighting and the ending of subsidies
to bull breeders.
In our website you have all the emails of the MEPs of the 27 Member States
as well as a sample letter in 5 languages. You can also read the complete
text of the written declaration in five languages below the sample letters.
Written declarations need a majority of MEPs to be approved. The European
Parliament has 785 MEPs which means we need 393 MEPs to sign the
declaration. So far according to official numbers 22 MEPs signed it. We
still have 3 months to send letters to the rest.

Mr. Mayor of Trenque Lauquen
Juan Carlos Font
We have received the appalling images of the treatment that your town is
giving to homeless dogs shown at :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4dHBqkymus
This event shows an absolute lack of respect towards society in general
and the international community as well, we are shocked and horrified at
the cruelty and pain inflected on defenceless and
sentient beings as non-human animals are.
We are aware that "your" method to control pet overpopulation is
absolutely contradictory with what it is mandated in your National Law #
14346 for the Protection of Animals and it is also opposed to
the World Health Organization Standards that state the only highly
recommended method to control pet overpopulation is massive spay/neuter
programs sustained in time.
Your actions, Mayor Font, clearly show the ineptitude of your
administration to solve this problem in an ethic and efficient way.
It also shows the unsafe conditions for potential tourists by not even
enforcing your own laws.
To sum up, Mr Font, we urge you to implement a serious pet overpopulation
control program which respects life and the right to live it above all.
Otherwise we will choose other destinations for
our holidays, and encourage others to do likewise.
We are forwarding this message to all our contacts and to Argentine
embassies all over the world.

Dn. Juan Carlos Font
Han llegado a nosotros las devastadoras imágenes el tramiento que su
comuna da a los perros sin hogar:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_4dHBqkymus

Who's supporting Iditarod dog torture in 2007?
Source: The Sled Dog Action Coalition, http://www.helpsleddogs.org
Please help the Iditarod dogs by sending protest emails to race
supporters. These dogs are helpless victims of profoundly inhumane
treatment and cannot speak for themselves. What happens to them during the
Iditarod includes death, paralysis, penile frostbite, bleeding ulcers,
bloody diarrhea, lung damage, ruptured discs, viral diseases and pneumonia.
For the dogs, the Iditarod is a bottomless pit of suffering. Throughout
this eight to 16-day competition, Iditarod personnel encourage mushers to
race diseased dogs. Instead of pulling sick dogs from the race,
veterinarians frequently give them massive doses of antibiotics to keep
them running.
Veterinarians also work to help the mushers before the Iditarod begins.
Although the dogs are often sick, veterinarians allow them to start the
race anyway. One chief Iditarod veterinarian even published a
musher/veterinary handbook advising mushers on how to avoid having
prohibited substances detected in pre-race veterinary checks.
Please speak for the dogs by sending Iditarod supporters protest emails.
The 2007 Iditarod sponsors, musher sponsors, race promoters and business
members are listed below. Emails are first given in a group and then
individually under the sample letter. Email addresses with semi-colons in
a group form can be found at http://www.helpsleddogs.org/sponsors.htm on
the bottom of the page.

SAMPLE LETTER:
Dear Iditarod Supporter:
I protest your organization's support of the Iditarod dog sled race. For
the dogs, this barbaric event is a bottomless pit of suffering. What
happens to them during the Iditarod includes death, paralysis, penile
frostbite, bleeding ulcers, bloody diarrhea, lung damage, ruptured discs,
viral diseases and pneumonia. Please end your involvement in this cruel
race.
In the Iditarod, dogs are forced to run 1,150 miles, which is the
approximate distance between Miami, Florida and New York City. USA Today
sports columnist Jon Saraceno called the Iditarod "a travesty of grueling
proportions" and "Ihurtadog." Fox sportscaster Jim Rome called it
"I-killed-a-dog." Orlando Sentinel sports columnist George Diaz said the
race is "a barbaric ritual" and "an illegal sweatshop for dogs."
Please visit the Sled Dog Action Coalition website
http://www.helpsleddogs.org and be sure to read the quotes on
http://www.helpsleddogs.org/remarks.htm . All the material on the site is
true and verifiable.
Throughout this eight to 16-day competition, Iditarod personnel encourage
mushers to race diseased dogs.
At least 130 dogs have died in the Iditarod. No one knows how many dogs
die after this tortuous ordeal or during training.
On average, 52 percent of the dogs who start the race do not make it
across the finish line. According to a report published in the American
Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, of those who do cross,
81 percent have lung damage. A report published in the Journal of
Veterinary Internal Medicine said that 61 percent of the dogs who finish
the Iditarod have ulcers versus zero percent pre-race.
Tom Classen, retired Air Force colonel and Alaskan resident for over 40
years, tells us that the dogs are beaten into submission:
"They've had the hell beaten out of them." "You don't just whisper into
their ears, 'OK, stand there until I tell you to run like the devil.' They
understand one thing: a beating. These dogs are beaten into submission the
same way elephants are trained for a circus. The mushers will deny it. And
you know what? They are all lying." -USA Today, March 3, 2000 in Jon
Saraceno's column.
Mushers believe in "culling" or killing unwanted dogs, including puppies.
Many dogs who are permanently disabled in the Iditarod, or who are
unwanted for any reason, including those who have outlived their
usefulness, are killed with a shot to the head, dragged or clubbed to
death. "Dogs are clubbed with baseball bats and if they don't pull are
dragged to death in harnesses....." wrote Alaskan Mike Cranford in an
article for Alaska's Bush Blade Newspaper (March, 2000).
Jon Saraceno wrote in his March 3, 2000 column in USA Today, "He [Colonel
Tom Classen] confirmed dog beatings and far worse. Like starving dogs to
maintain their most advantageous racing weight. Skinning them to make
mittens. Or dragging them to their death."
Please end your organization's association with this horrific race.
Sincerely,

CALL/EMAIL TO URGE RELEASE OF MONKEY BEING HELD CAPTIVE AT UNIVERSITY OF
MISSISSIPPI MEDICAL CTR.
Source: http://www.uchckillsmonkeys.com/
Our organization's (UConn Animal Rights Collective)efforts over the past
year, with support from a plethora of national and international advocacy
groups, were instrumental in the recent termination of the nonhuman primate
research program at University of CT Health Center that culminated with
the unfortunate transfer of a rhesus macaque named Mowgli to the
University of Mississippi Medical Center under the care of Dr. Paul May.
The primary investigator on the protocol at the UConn Health Center, Dr.
David Waitzman, received extensive sanctioning from the UCHC Animal Care
Committee and USDA for repeated, significant violations of Animal Welfare
Act that culminated in the revocation of approval for the research that
involved drilling holes into the skulls of rhesus macaques. You can read
more about the issue here:
By building alliances with a wide array of activists, advocates, medical
professionals and researchers across the country as well the proprietors
of several prominent animal sanctuaries, we have been able to secure
consulting services, veterinary care, and funding to transport and provide
a safe sanctuary home for Mowgli.
Mowgli has experienced insurmountable grief and trauma. All three of his
nonhuman primate companions at UCHC, the only persons like himself that he
knows, have died or been euthanized while he, for years, watched and
waited for his turn to come. Given that Mowgli has not yet been subjected
to any invasive procedures, this is the perfect opportunity to provide him
with the life he undoubtedly deserves.
The pieces are all in place to provide a safe haven for Mowgli and we need
your help to insure that the project comes to fruition.
Please contact the administrators at the University of Mississippi Medical
Center listed below via email and telephone and urge them, given the
circumstances listed above, to agree to release Mowgli and participate
with us in the relocation process.

Dear Dr. Hall,
Thank you for your time. In light of the recent misconduct uncovered at
the University of Connecticut Health Center and the subsequent transfer of
a young macaque named Mowgli to your facility, as a taxpayer and person
who abhors cruelty, I am requesting that plans be made for Mowgli to be
relocated to an accredited sanctuary immediately.
This monkey has experienced insurmountable grief and trauma. All three of
his nonhuman primate companions at UCHC, the only persons like himself
that he knows, have died or been euthanized while he, for years, watched
and waited for his turn to come. Given that Mowgli has not yet been
subjected to any invasive procedures, this is the perfect opportunity to
provide him with the life he undoubtedly deserves.
I look forward to a positive resolution to this matter.
