salutations.

Dear Mr.Mayor
I was saddened to learn that your commune hosts
bullfights.
A bullfight is a show in which animals are
methodically tortured to death.
For an agonizing twenty minutes, bulls are
impaled with up to 1.50 meter bladed weapons including goads, banderillas,
swords, and daggers. Exhausted by internal and external bleeding, lungs filled
with blood, the bulls die slowly, vomiting blood, but are not always clinically
dead when their ear or tail is cut off as a trophy. This torture is repeated on
a series of six bulls. The horses also undergo acute suffering, although they
are not always
killed during the show. Regardless of the art behind this
torture, it is not acceptable today.
If you are unaware of the barbarity of
bullfights, please take a look at the photos on the following
pages:
Or view a short film on this page:
Travel agencies like MacDonald Tours, Martin
Travel, and Thomas Cook Tours Thunder Bay in Ontario, Canada, are boycotting
bullfight areas in France due to the cruelty of these shows, which shock
visitors. The bullfights in your commune therefore undermine tourism not only
locally, but also throughout your entire region.
I will not be visiting your commune as long as
it hosts bullfights.

1. SAMPLE LETTER: To officials of
JAPAN
Dear Prime Minister Koizumi and Minister of
Fisheries Shimamura:
I am concerned about Japan's ongoing involvement
in commercial whaling despite unanimous international disapproval. I
respectfully demand:
* Japanese authorities comply with the moratorium on
commercial whaling.
* The Japanese government, as an IWC member, uphold its
pledge to the Southern Ocean Whale Sanctuary in the Antarctic.
I worry not only about minke whales, but also
the at-risk humpback whales whom tourists have happily observed for the last two
decades. These whales, accustomed to humans, approach boats in Australian waters
and are easy prey for Japan's "scientific" whaling vessels. Essentially,
Japanese whalers in Antarctic waters threaten to ruin Australia's annual $273
million whale watching industry.
Japan's guesstimate on whale totals is out of
sync with Professor Stephen Palumbi's breakthrough genetic studies showing whale
populations have dropped to 1% of their previous numbers. Whales are slow
breeders with a high infant death rate. Commercial whaling -- along with
environmental perils such as chemical pollution, seismic and naval sonar,
entrapment in nets, ship strikes, and habit loss -- negate the chance for whale
population recovery.
Japan has long exploited the IWC's exemption for
"scientific whaling."
Plainly, there are no empirical grounds for butchering
whales to analyze migration, age, ecology or behavior. Top IWC scientists have
repeatedly renounced Japan's manipulation of this loophole. In fact, the IWC
advocates non-lethal whale conservation. Japan's slaughter-and-study of
endangered humpbacks and other whales is a veil for its lucrative commerce in
whale meat. Whale cuisine shows up in school lunch programs and even dog
food.
Lastly, whaling is utterly non-sustainable.
Whales are part of the oceanic chain: Their excrement feeds plankton which feeds
all fish and oxygenates the water. When plankton dies, fish starve and suffocate
from a deficit of oxygen. Eliminating whales exacerbates plankton loss, which is
already in critical decline. Ultimately, if more oceanic regions die (160 are
now confirmed dead zones), we'll feel the effect in depleted atmospheric
oxygen.
I call upon Japan to identify whales as integral
to oceanic survival. Please understand this is a human issue as well, since
oceans supply 70-80% of our oxygen. Certainly, healthy oceans supersede the
short-range profits reaped from whale slaughter.
If Japan fails to act in accordance with IWC
rulings, whale populations and their impact on marine ecosystems may NEVER
rebound. Please do not let this become Japan's legacy. Thank you for your
valuable time and consideration in this urgent matter.
Sincerely,

Dear Ministers,
I am extremely concerned about Japan's intent to
double its "scientific" slaughter of minke whales and to hunt humpback and fin
whales in Antarctic waters. Despite unanimous international disapproval, Japan
is set to kill whales inside the Australian Whale Sanctuary, including humpbacks
who annually migrate along Australia's east and west coasts.
I respectfully ask you to actively prevent Japan
from destroying humpback, minke and fin whales. In particular, the slaughter of
humpback whales under IWC Special Permit in Antarctic waters will further
diminish any hope for population recovery.
Japan's guesstimate on whale totals is out of
sync with Professor Stephen Palumbi's breakthrough genetic studies showing whale
populations have dropped to 1% of their previous numbers. Whales are slow
breeders with a high infant death rate. Commercial whaling -- along with
chemical pollution, seismic and naval sonar, entrapment in nets, global
warming's influence on plankton availability, ship strikes, and habit loss --
endanger populations barely back from near-extinction.
Japan has long exploited the IWC's exemption for
"scientific whaling."
Plainly, there are no empirical grounds for butchering
whales to analyze migration, age, ecology or behavior. Top IWC scientists have
repeatedly asked Japan to stop manipulating this loophole. In fact, the IWC
advocates non-lethal whale conservation. Japan's slaughter-and-study of

The Japanese Whaling Company Kyodo Senpaku kills
whales in the Australian Whale Sanctuary next to Antarctic waters. I strongly
urge the Federal government to try Japan in the International Court of Justice
for violating its rights to the IWC. Please also maintain pressure on Pacific
Islands such as Solomon Islands, Tuvalu, Kiribati, etc. to vote AGAINST whaling
at the IWC.
Japan has habitually failed to act in accordance
with IWC rulings. Japanese whalers in Antarctic waters threaten to ruin
Australia's annual $273 million whale watching industry. Moreover, if Japan
continues without penalty, whale populations and their impact on marine

5. SAMPLE LETTER: To U.S. President
Bush
Dear Mr. President,
Despite official U.S. opposition and unanimous
global disapproval, Japan intends to double its "scientific" slaughter of minke
whales and to hunt humpback and fin whales in Antarctic waters. In the Southern
Ocean Whale Sanctuary, protected under international treaty, Japan has killed
more than 860 whales -- already twice the number destroyed in 2005.
America needs to let Japan know: "Make no
mistake. If you fail to act in accordance with International Whaling Commission
(IWC) rulings, you face serious penalties." If Japan continues without
consequence, whale populations and their impact on marine ecosystems may NEVER
rebound.
The slaughter-and-study of endangered
humpbacks and other whales is merely a veil for Japan's lucrative commerce in
whale meat.
Furthermore, Japan "buys" votes from smaller IWC
nations by bribing them with financial aid. This is part of their campaign to
reinstate legalized whale hunting and sabotage immunity for protected
sanctuaries and species.
Please also take into account the violent and
inhumane nature of whaling.
These graceful giants are blasted with
grenade-tipped spears that blow up inside their bodies, shredding internal
organs. It can take up to one hour for a whale to die.
It is vital that the United States take a firm
stand against Japanese whaling. Specifically, I ask you to oppose Japan's bid
for permanent membership on the United Nations Security Council until the
country upholds international treaty obligations and identifies whales as
integral to oceanic survival.
Whaling is utterly non-sustainable. Whales are
part of the oceanic chain:
Their excrement feeds plankton which feeds all

Claiming to uphold the IWC ban on commercial
whaling is not enough. Please take immediate action to stop Japanese whalers
before it is too late. Thank you for your valuable time and consideration in
this matter of international concern.

After being closed for 6 years the bullring of Lisbon reopened
after renovation work on the 18th May.
A small shopping mall was built under
the bullring with shops, bars and restaurants.
This cost 60 million euros.
If you visit Lisbon boycott this shopping mall, because some of the money
spent in these shops will be used to subsidise the bullring itself.
Please sent protest letters to the Mayor of Lisbon and to the
Department of Tourism. (Try to write a different letter, please)
Dear Mr. Mayor,
I was informed that Lisbon has again its "cathedral" of
torture reopened.
It's shameful that after 6 years of being a capital free of
cruelty it's now again a capital of torture.
While you persist in torturing animals in the name of
"tradition and culture" I will not visit your city and I will advise my family
and friends to do the same.

Iowa's dogs to become "farm produce"?
Source:http://itstheirdestiny.2kat.net
As you
know, ITD concentrates its attention primarily on the dog and cat abuse
situation in South Korea. If however you click on the "More Abusers" link on our
web site, you will find some other countries and regions where companion animals
are treated with less than the care that most of us would expect. There are
currently two states of the USA listed in that category, California and Hawaii.
Shortly we may regretfully have to add Iowa to this shameful list.
There
is currently a Bill on the Governor's desk awaiting his signature (see Bill 2797
at http://coolice.legis.state.ia.us/Cool-ICE/default.asp?Category=billinfo&Service=Billbook&menu=false&hbill=HF2797 ).
Every indication is that he intends to sign it. If he does,
dogs from puppy mills in Iowa will become reclassified as "farm produce". This
means that they will have a lesser degree of protection under the law since
abuse and cruelty laws for animals classified as livestock aren't as strict.
There are, not surprisingly, other dangers. Should this Bill pass into law, it
will open the door to the possibility of even dog eating or breeding for fur. As
ITD's supporters will know, there are many in the USA who would be very pleased
to see these developments (see http://itstheirdestiny.2kat.net/calif.html).
The implications of this proposal are horrifying! Although
this would apply in only one state, it would set back the cause of animal rights
throughout America.
You will probably by now be asking why this
reclassification is even being considered. Believe it or not, it is designed to
give tax breaks to puppy mills!
Please contact Governor Vilsack and tell
him that Iowa's shelters have plenty of dogs in need of adoption. Even if it
were necessary to encourage breeders through tax incentives, there are far less
clumsy ways of doing so than through this danger-fraught Bill! The Bill is a
combination of several proposals - ask the Governor to remove all references to
dogs before signing it!

Below is a SAMPLE email. PLEASE write an original if you possibly
can!
Dear Governor Vilsack,
I was both shocked and dismayed
to learn that the proposed Bill 2797 contains clauses that would reclassify dogs
in breeding establishments as "farm produce" to give tax breaks to
breeders.
It seems strange that dog breeders should be financially
encouraged when Iowa's dog shelters are overflowing with animals desperate for a
home. Is it really sensible for an increase in the dog population to be funded
by the state?
The majority of dog breeders are responsible in their
attitudes to both their dogs and society. Such breeders are not after tax
incentives and they treat their dogs with due care. Classifying them as "farm
produce" will however reduce the scant legal protection from cruelty given to
the dogs owned by less scrupulous and less caring breeders.
Several
states have recently passed legislation to ban the consumption of dog meat.
Please consider the implications of this proposed reclassification - would you
really want this Bill to be seen as legitimising dog eating? That would be the
clear message that 2797's passage would send to immigrants from those countries
that have this un-American custom.
I respectfully urge you to strike
out these clauses before you sign this Bill.
Yours
sincerely,
