EGYPT
Egyptian authorities poison campaign against
strays
Please send a protest letter to the Egyptian Embassies and
Consulates around the world about the recently announced poison campaign against
cats and dogs.
Emails:
Dear Honorable Ambassador/Counsel of Egypt,
News that Egyptian veterinary authorities in Giza have
announced a poisoning campaign against cats and dogs alarms me.
The Giza area has had a spaying/neutering project done
through Vier pfoten, an organization from Austria, in cooperation with the
Society for Protection of Animal Rights in Egypt (SPARE) and the Egyptian
Society for Animal Friends (ESAF). Furthermore, a five year neutering
project with WSPA to neuter animals was agreed upon with the head of the
veterinary department in Egypt; the project is due to start in few
weeks.
I am also very concerned to hear that strychnine will be used
to kill animals. This poison causes a slow and painful death for animals. Many
other innocent animals, such as people's pets and birds, would also be die
through accidental poisoning.
Please abandon the poisoning campaign. Neutering, education
about animal welfare in schools, and re-homing initiatives work and can help to
reduce the number of strays. Many animal welfare organisations are willing to
help you with such cruelty-free initiatives.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter and I very
much look forward to hearing from you shortly.
Yours sincerely,

EUROPEAN UNION
The European Commission is currently preparing a Community
Action Plan on Animal Welfare and Protection which will outline planned
initiatives in this area for the coming years. It is very important that such
initiatives take into account the views of citizens and so this internet
consultation is being organised to collect information on public attitudes to
the welfare and protection of farmed animals. The consultation will close on 20
December 2005.

INDONESIA
Help Stop the Trade in Endangered Wild Species in
Indonesia
Hundreds of thousands of wild animals, many from endangered
species and which are supposed to be protected by Indonesian law, are trapped
and sold each year in the illegal wildlife trade in Indonesia. The center of
this trade takes place in the so-called bird markets (Pasar Burung), with the
Pramuka bird market in Jakarta being the largest.
The trade in wild species
is estimated to be worth Indonesian Rupiah 9 trillion (US$900 Million) per
year.
Indonesia has existing legislation protecting wildlife and
forbidding trade in protected species, sentencing any lawbreaker up to 5 years
imprisonment. Notwithstanding the law, the trade continues unabated.
Weak
enforcement of the law is the key factor enabling this active trade. According
to investigations by ProFauna (an Indonesian animal advocacy organization) 95%
of wild animals traded in such markets have been trapped in the wild. This trade
is not only cruel, it poses a serious threat to the natural environment and the
biodiversity of Indonesian flora and fauna.
What You Can Do:
Write to the Indonesian President, the Indonesian House of
Representative/Parliament (DPR) and to international Ambassadors.

Note: Emails sent to Indonesia may bounce back for a variety
of reasons. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Dear Excellency:
I am writing to urge you to do everything in your power to end
the destructive trade of wild animals in Indonesia.
A recent investigation by an Indonesian animal welfare
organization revealed that 95% of wild animals traded have been trapped in the
wild. An additional investigation of five Java bird marts found that 47% of the
parrots traded were protected under Indonesian law and
include those listed
on CITES Appendix I. For most threatened parrots trade is a primary cause of
dramatic population decline.
The trade in wildlife is dangerous and cruel. Exotic animal
markets are hot spots for a number of viral, bacterial, and parasitic diseases
that traded animals can become infected with and, if transmitted, can cause
serious and costly risks to human health, livestock, and other animals. In
addition, many wild-caught animals are killed in the process of capture and
still more die of starvation, dehydration, suffocation, or disease before even
reaching
their final destination. Those that do survive typically lead
miserable lives confined to chains or small barren cages.
Please help preserve Indonesia's beautiful wildlife by
demanding the enforcement of existing laws protecting endangered species,
confiscating wildlife from the traders in major bird markets, such as Pasar
Burung Pramuka in Jakarta and Bratang in Surabaya, and by
enacting strict
penalties for those who violate the law.
Thank you for your attention to this issue that is of
international concern.
Sincerely,
