The University and University Hospital campus in Ioannina, Greece has traditionally been a dumping ground for unwanted dogs. Poisoning has been used regularly to control the number of dogs and has been done during holiday periods in an attempt for the dead bodies and disappearance of the animals to remain relatively unnoticed.

Over the last month, however, the majority of dogs have disappeared and others have been found suffering from symptoms of poisoning. It would appear that the authorities or their staff are once again taking the law into their own hands.

Presentation of the campaign

It's called "Caccia il Cacciatore - o i cacciatori, o i turisti!"  ("Get rid of the hunters or loose the tourists!"), and it's based on the tourism boycott idea.

This initiative proposes a direct attack.
We invite you all, as foreign tourists, to "help us become civilized" and liberate us from the domineering high-handedness of the hunters: refuse to visit the areas particularly hit by the cruelty of hunters and poachers - areas infested with hunters who shoot at everything that moves, areas infested with traps, poisoned bait, and particularly permissive regional laws.

We noticed that hunters - and their protectors - begin to be scared of this campaign: one of the MP hunter's friend has recentely declared to the newspapers that our campaign is "dangerous and extremist"!

Hunting is dangerous for humans, too

We think that is really important to stress the fact that hunting is deadly dangerous not only for animals, but for human beings, too: an interesting report (available in Italian only, for now), called "Se la caccia fosse un lavoro" ("If hunting were a job") answers to the following questions:
- How many deadly or serious casualties have been caused by "hunting accidents"?
- How dangerous is hunting for human beings?
The report compares the rules and legislation regulating the hunting practice and the rules and legislation about security in working areas. If hunting were a job, will it be so loosely regulated as it is now?

The Mafia and Mozzarella di Bufala

For the past 17 years of her life, Dr. Dorothea Friz, a German veterinarian, has dedicated her life to responsible animal care in Italy. She never dreamed her battle for animals would turn into a battle with the Camorra - the Naples Mafia.Driving down a country road, not far from her Pro-Animal League Center, she saw what looked like an abandoned dog on the roadside. She pulled over. The shaky black figure was the size of a large dog. Dr. Friz was horrified to see that the creature, covered in blood and feces and buckling at the knees, was a newborn buffalo.The newborn was in a very weakened condition, with no mother in sight. Dr. Friz coaxed him into the back of her car. Little did she know that this innocent animal would bring her threats from the Mafia.Upon arrival at her Veterinarian center, Dorothea didn't waste any time looking for answers to her many questions. Where was the mother? How did the newborn get on the road? Were there others? The answers would bring the too curious vet right into the heart of the Mafia-run business of Mozzarella cheese production made from Buffalo milk."Emilio-Giovanni" was born on a Mozzarella farm. He was taken away from his mom right after birth. Not being a milk producer, he had no market value. His mom's milk was destined to end up as Mozzarella on someone's pizza. Dr. Friz continued her investigation to find out how Emilio-Giovanni had reached the road. She discovered the cruel breeders had thrown him into a deep ditch where other newborn males were buried alive, slowly suffocating under the weight of ones thrown on top. Many were already dead.Somehow Emilio-Giovanni had managed to get out of the death hole and find his way off the "farm" to the nearest road. It was just his luck that AISPA's vet, Dr. Friz was passing right at that time to save him.Thanks to Dorothea we now know Emilio-Giovanni represents one of 200,000 male newborn buffaloes doomed to die a slow death every year in the Naples area of Italy. The Mozzarella di Bufala industry, run mainly by the Camorra, ignores all European Parliament laws about the humane killing of animals. They don't want anything cutting into their profits. After more than one year of filing reports with numerous Ministries in the Italian and European Parliaments, nothing has been done. Dorothea lives with threats (her telephone lines were cut), but continues to fight to save the baby buffaloes from such suffering. Epilogue: Loveable Emilio-Giovanni is about 400kg now and loves to attack water pipes so he can take a nice shower. He and 3 other buffaloes saved by Dorothea stay by her side when she is outside. They don't have any "market value", but for that matter, neither do any of the most precious things in life.

We have been informed of the inhumane way in which newborn male buffaloes are killed in the Naples Region of Campania. Even though these creatures have no market value (they don't render milk to make mozzarella), this should not mean that their lives are worthless. Besides the cruelty of burying these creatures alive, which is completely against Italian and European Community law, the health hazards to the community are numerous.

The lack of law enforcement over the "Mozzarella di Bufala" industry also extends to the adult animals who are not checked regularly for diseases (e.g. ears are not tagged by the Italian Health Ministry). This presents a clear health risk to all people who eat Mozzarella di Bufala made in ltaly.

Italy is a wonderful country with a great history of civilization. People from all over the world al attracted to the high level of culture and quality of life that is offered. Even the animal protection laws are some of the best in the world. We are sure that you would want to continue that tradition and reputation by resolving the plight of the newborn male buffaloes.

 

We thank you in advance for looking into these irregularities and making Mozzarella di Bufala safe to eat and cruelty free. Unfortunately I must inform you that I will not buy Mozzarella again, and I will inform my friends of the unacceptable exploitation of these animals.

SPANISH BULLFIGHTER PROMOTES BULLFIGHTS ON MALAYSIAN TELEVISON

According to news from the Spanish newspaper "El Mundo", the Spanish bullfighter Jesus de Farina has recorded a TV advert in Kuala Lumpur for a fruit-juice brand named "Graby". This advert shows the bullfighter dressed in his costume leaving the hotel in a van and being driven to the bullring where he shows the "art" of bullfighting. Although the passes showed in the bullring were computer generated, the problem is that this is an attempt to accustomise the Malaysians to bullfights and is the first step towards introducing this "sport" into their country.

In an interview given to the Spanish newspaper the bullfighter says: "This is a promotion and I am surprised with the receptivity shown by the promoters of "Gabry" juices as well as the Red Archer publicity company. We can see that bullfights have lots of fans even in places so far away like Malaysia and this is something that we should exploit".

His words leave little doubt that the idea is to introduce in a near future bullfights in Malaysia.

Dear Prime Minister,

 

I learned through a Spanish newspaper that a Spanish bullfighter recorded a TV advert for a juice drink in Kuala Lumpur. The advert shows a bullfight.

You sould be aware that bullfights are spectacles of extreme cruelty where bulls and horses are tortured in the name of entertainment.

According to this Spanish matador Malaysia is a promising country for the import of this "sport" and people are receptive to this kind of torture.

I do not believe that a country like Malaysia can be receptive to torture towards animals, therefore I kindly request that you don't allow these spectacles to be introduced into your country.

Bullfights dehumanise people and are condusive to violence. This has an effect on society both in the short and long term in that people have less respect for other human beings, since who does not respect animals cannot respect humans.

THE CITY OF SEGORBE (VALENCIA) PROMOTES CRUELTY AS AN INTERNATIONAL TOURIST ATTRACTION

The city of Segorbe is promoting in international travel industry fairs and trade magazines throughout the world the "fiesta" of running of bulls and horses as an international tourist attraction.

The Tourism Department of Segorbe has made leaflets available in English, German, French and Spanish to send to world-wide.

Minister Eduardo Zaplana and the President of the Government of Valencia, Francisco Camps are committed to getting recognition for this "Fiesta" as an International Attraction.

This year during this spectacle several horses were wounded.

Please spread the word in your countries denouncing the true reality behind this and do not visit this city.

In 1999 Dr. Kala Santha started a pilot project for supply of birth control injections to dogs within  Kotte Municipal council for use on female  dogs. These injections were given by the employees of the  health
department. The Public Health Veterinary Director P.A.L Harischandra and the former Mayor Mr Chandra de Silva decided to buy a dog catching van, wasting the money of the residents of the area.

The residents have sent petitions with Dr Kala Santha to them and asked them to use the  funds for a birth control programme.The Kotte Municipality could have borrowed the dog catching van from  Narahenpita  or
Colombo if they wanted the van for such purpose.
Then Mayor Mr .Chandra de Silva and Public health Veterinary Director P.A.Harischandra made a dog catchin van .
We want the Commissioner to investigate Bribery and corruption charges aginst the Public Health Veterinary Director P.A.L Harischandra and the former Mayor Mr Chandra de Silva.

Dogs belonged to the Following residents were killed  by the Kotte Municipal council and poison was provided by the Public Health Veterinary Director P.A.L Harischandra.

In June 2002  a dog  named `Chuti` who lived next door to  Kotte Municipal council was  taken away by the dog catching van .Few hours later the  owners went in search of that dog  but the officers of the Municipal refused to
show the  body..

On September 27th 2002  at about 9.30 am some officers of the Health Department came in a dog catching van to the Dimiyawa Maha Vidyalaya of Ratnapura and started killing dogs in the garden of the school. School
children were pleading the officers to not to kill the dogs since they were immunised against rabies.
By the time the principal arrived all the innocent dogs were killed. When asked for an explanation they verbally abused the principal .

On the 12th of March 2003 Mrs.Wanigasekara  who lives in  38E -3 ,Lake Drive ,Rajagiriya opened  the door  to the dog catcher. He was standing with a  pole syringe and  her pet dog  was dying on the ground. The other pet dog had already been killed  by the dog catching van of the Kotte Municipal Council. This killing was done on private property. She  lodged  a complaint against them at the Welikada  police  station.

Mrs.Wanigasekara's dogs were licenced  and immunised against rabies.They had the yellow collar around their necks which identified them as being immunised. These dogs had never atacked anybody.
No action was taken against the Public Health Vetrinary Director P.A.l Harischandra of Public Health Veterinary Services,549 Elvitigala Mawatha ,Colombo 5, or the veterinary surgeon of Kotte Municipal Council, Mrs Mendis. The commission should investigate the charges against Kotte Municipal veterinary surgeon Mrs Mendis.

Dear Prime Minister,

 

A Swiss animal actvist Edith Zellweger started a free sterilization program in Kandy, Sri Lanka about 5 years ago .They have stopped the stray dogs being killed in Kandy. On the 3rd of October Kandy Municipal Council had a meeting regarding the few stray dogs in the Kandy market. Public Health Veterinary Director Dr. P.A.L Harischandra and the Kandy Mayor and the Municipal veterinary surgeon Dr. Jayasinghe want to kill the dogs in Kandy. We kindly request you to accept birth control as a method of population control and of eradicating rabies. India is a country which has achieved success using birth control programmes.

The Government should also introduce a breeding licence and introduce new laws to stop puppy mills.
The proposal for sterilization alone to control the dog population is not practical as it involves lot of money and time and is not cost effective.As it would be difficult to neuter all the animals at the same time, they can be given birth control injections to delay problems until such time as the surgery could be performed. This can be easily solved by importing contraceptive injections  through the State Pharmaceutical Corporation. These injections could be used with antirabies vaccination programme. The local authorities can afford  to spend the money needed for contraceptive injections.

Please advise the Mayor of Kandy to continue the sterilization programme instead of killing them.

Solicito a Usted muy respetuosamente que prohíba esta corrida. No permita que la tortura y el sufrimiento bañen de sangre la capital de tan hermoso país. No olvide que los turistas evitan visitar países que no respetan a los animales.

Recuerde también el ejemplo de su gran amigo Fidel Castro, que en el año 2000 prohibió una corrida de toros en Cuba, país que no tiene este tipo de eventos desde hace 47 años.
