A monthly Magazine edited and published by Maria Lopes - October 2004

Dear Friends,

China, a country that does not respect animals and is stained with blood , imported another barbarity, bullfights. The King of Spain a well known hunter and bullfight lover goes to Romania and Poland to hunt protected species. Norway allows the hunting of baby seals for touristic purposes. The world is getting worse everyday for non human animals.

Please protest, send emails, remember we are their voice. Only we can speak for them.

CHINA

ECHOES OF THE BULLFIGHTS

Source: INTERNATIONAL MOVEMENT AGAINST BULLFIGHT

As you already know the bullfights took place the 23rd and 24th of October in Shanghai.
They were not a huge success as some bullfighters and aficionados claim but a fiasco. The numbers of people quoted as attending are totally dissimilar. The bullfighters talk about 8.000 and 10.000 persons. The news agency of China speak about 2.000.
We suspect ,although we don't have yet figures and probably we will never have that also in monetary terms was another fiasco. They spent lots of money to buy the bulls from Mexico, transport them, to pay to bullfighters and in the end the tickects sold probably won't pay all the money spent to organise and perform the bullfights.
Nonetheless there are already three other cities in China ineterested in performing bullfights.
Meanwhile the official newspaper China Daily criticised strongly the bullfights in an article that we transcribe below. Is possible to leave a comment on the article just by clicking in the link.

Please continue to send protests or the postcards that can be copied from our website.
For the moment some of the emails addresses are coming undeliverable or with failure message. We suspect that they have disconnected temporarily the email boxes.
So please mark your agendas and keep sending emails in order to prevent other cities to repeat this barbaric spectacle. The postcards are available at http://www.2kat.net/iwab/mainpage.html

Bullfight in Shanghai a mistake
Fei Li  Updated: 2004-10-25 08:55

For some, the past weekend was another milestone on Shanghai's route to becoming a truly international metropolitan city.

A much-publicized series of bull fights was held over the weekend in the city, China's economic hub.

The stadium-turned-bullring cost 5 million yuan (US$605,000) to transform, and both matador and bulls were brought from Spain and Mexico to Shanghai for a bullfight with a truly Spanish flavour, the organizers claimed.

Clearly it was a commercial event, but what some people relish most is the status the bullfight has brought to Shanghai - the first bullfight to have been held in Asia.

To them, it underlines Shanghai's bid to become a world-class metropolitan city.

The ecstasy over the first Formula One Grand Prix, which was held last month and cost the city billions, is still apparent.

The city's preparations are already under way for the upcoming 2010 World Expo.

While it is understandable that Shanghai's ambition to go international, an ambition shared by many other Chinese cities, means some large cultural and sporting events are necessary to promote the city, it should be remembered that all actions be done in a manner that keeps an eye on conditions on the ground.

Cities blindly promoting their image just for the sake of attracting the limelight go against their original intentions.

Literally a dance with death, bullfighting has been characterized by its cruelty and violence, and is now something the civilized world shuns.

Even in its birthplace, Spain, bullfighting, originally a sport reserved for the aristocracy, has never been free of controversy.

Felipe V, king of Spain from 1700 to 1746, banned nobles from taking part in the sport during his reign, fearing its adverse influence on public education.

From then on, commoners took it up.

Barcelona, Spain's second largest city, has taken the lead by banning bullfighting from April 6 this year.

Yet while it is being questioned or banned in its home country, the centuries-old sport may not have expected to find a welcome thousands of miles away.

Bringing in a cruel entertainment that has been widely condemned by civilized society to promote the city's image is more likely to end up bringing shame.

Even if it is used to spur on the local culture or sports market, as some have said, such arguments do not hold much water either.

With tickets costing between 180 yuan (US$22) and 2,800 yuan (US$301), the "virtual feast" is a little bit out of reach for ordinary people, meaning only the relatively affluent can afford to watch the bloody performance anyway.

While animal protection and anti-violence is becoming more fashionable in society, Shanghai's "bravery" in staging this kind of bloodsport betrays itself as one of China's most modern cities.

Rather than a milestone in its bid to become a much-coveted international metropolis status - indeed, the bullfighting episode is more like a slap in the face.

NORWAY

THE NEW "SPORT" FOR TOURISTS - HUNTING BABY SEALS

Source: The Guardian/BBC and Help the Animals

Please send a protest email to the following directions:

Dear Prime Minister and Honorable Officials of Norway:

I understand Parliament approved Fishery Minister Svein Ludvigsen's plan to open Norway's seal hunt to tourists. The global community firmly opposes Canada's annual seal massacre. Why would Norway want to stain its international image with the blood of an expanded seal hunt?

As a potential tourist, I will not travel to countries that value the interests of hunters over the vast majority who enjoy live animals in their natural habitat.

Recreational seal slaughter is a bad idea. Docile baby seals--animals so fragile they can barely swim or eat on their own--will become easy prey for amateur enthusiasts. Adventure companies such as NorSafari already feature holidays that reflect the government's decision to inflate kill quotas, with packages for beginners guaranteeing one to two seals. Similar advertising from secure1.insweb.com and Polar Events, while attractive to a minority of hunters, will tarnish Norway's appeal for most tourists.

The rationale for enlarging Norway's seal cull appears to come from fishermen who report depleted fish populations in the North Sea. Yet there is no definitive, peer-reviewed study to confirm the link between seals and declining fish stocks. Over-fishing, which destroys seabeds and strips resources from the water, is the more likely culprit.

Seals have lived harmoniously with other marine life for most of their existence. I strongly encourage the Norwegian government to address the critical problem of industrial fishing, instead of scapegoating seals.

As long as officials endorse inhumane seal hunt vacations, I will urge friends, family and colleagues to join me in a boycott of Norwegian tourism. Thank you for considering worldwide opinion in this serious matter. I look forward to your feedback.

Sincerely,

HELP US TO BAN THE SHOOTING AGAINST PIGEONS

Source: Melotxu

Please help us to erradicate this slaughter of pigeons in the Spanish region of Extremadura.
Young pigeons and partridges are let loose from small cages on the ground at a small distance from the shooter to be cowardly massacred.
Please send protest letters to:

Honorable President:
oiac@badajoz.map.es

With copy to (cc)
Mayor of  Coria and other officials:

To the members of the Extremadura Council, Parliament Socialist delegates...

When some time ago Spain became Socialist again, we felt hopeful for the future, both for the citizens and also that silent mass of animals that suffer so much for the lack of proper laws to protect them.

In Europe we wish the well-being of EVERY one of the living creatures, products of Creation that are in our hands and it is our duty to respect. That is why we confidently address you to ask you to forbid pigeon shooting.

The Extremadura Assembly has already expressed by a majority of votes that it wishes to amend the law 5/2002.

With all due respect, allow us to support this initiative and hope that we will soon get the good news that the laws in Extremadura are equal to the rest of Europe.

Thanking you in advance.

PROTEST AGAINST THE KING OF SPAIN WHO WENT TO ROMANIA TO KILL BEARS

Source: Meriem

The King of Spain a well known hunter and bullfight lover went to Romania to hunt bears. He killed several bears and also a pregnant bear. He also went to Poland to hunt bison and pheasants. It's not the first time that he goes to these countries to hunt species that are protected.

Please send email protests to the Royal Palace at:

Your Majesty,

I learned that you went to Romania to hunt bears as well as to Poland to hunt bison and pheasants. These acts are totally inappropriate for person in a position like yours in a modern country. To kill animals just for "sport" and fun in the name of an anticuated tradition approved only by a pitiful minority, is not only archaic, but undignified of a modern and democratic Royal House!

And when you go to other countries to hunt protected species you sully the name of Spain.

You don't seem aware of the fact that both Spaniards and world citizens have shown their total rejection to any kind of activities where animals are victims of death.

With your behaviour not only have you managed to turn your people against you, but the people of Romania as well who feel outraged by your actions in their country.
