A monthly
Magazine edited and published by Maria Lopes September
2003
Dear Friends,
This issue of the Magazine was sent to everybody on the 27th of September but
apparently for some unknown reason many, if not the majority, of our readers
didn't receive it. Our apologies to those of you who consequently received it
twice.
Thanks to all of you who, month after month, continue to send
protest letters.
This month, believe it or not, we were actually
struggling to find enough campaigns to put in the Magazine. If you have been on
our mailing list for some time, you will know that we always try to include a
sample protest e-mail along with e-mail addresses to send it to.
The
creators of many campaigns however prefer that people write their own letters
and send by snail-mail. Although it is a fact that snail-mail letters are often
treated with more respect than e-mails by the recipients,we realize that most
people find it more convenient to send e-mails. A sample letter is also often
invaluable in coping with language problems since our readership is
international.
The readers of this Magazine are valued for their
participation in campaigns and their commitment to animal welfare. We would
therefore ask you, our readers, to forward to us any campaigns that you come
across that you think should be included in future releases of the Magazine.

Please accept this letter as a
petition against the Australian trade in live animals.
I was horrified to
learn that, for the sixth week over 57,000 Australian sheep remain on-board the
MV Cormo Express in the Middle East after being rejected by Saudi authorities.
At least 4,000 sheep have already perished in temperatures up to 45 degrees
Celsius.
Australia exports a million live cattle and 6 million live sheep
to the Middle East and S E Asia each year. In 2002, 73,000 sheep and 17,000
cattle died on-board. All faced ritual slaughter without pre-stunning,
conditions not tolerated in Australia.
I urge you to do all that is in
your power to bring the suffering of the 57,000 sheep to a quick end. I urge
you to ban the trade in live animals. Until then, I will boycott Australian
tourism and goods. Australia's treatment of animals in unacceptable in a
civilized world!

Dear
Vice Chancellor and Administrators of Cambridge University:
I understand
Cambridge University plans to erect a new primate research laboratory. While I
support medical research, I oppose the wasteful use of resources to simulate
human disease and injury in animals. I strongly urge Cambridge to evolve with
the most proficient and humane technologies available. Please proceed with the
research expansion, minus the animal unit. In a survey of 500 doctors published
in the European and British Medical Journal, 9 out of 10 admit that animal
experiments are deceptive. There are too many physiological, cellular,
genetic and psychological variations between species for reliable, predictive
extrapolation to humans. For example, chimpanzees who serve as HIV disease
models represent a dead end for HIV prevention, vaccines or drugs relevant to
humans. A chimpanzee's immune system encounters the virus in a different manner
than a human's immune network. As research models, these animals don't contract
AIDS or develop its clinical symptoms. The use of primates in behavioral
research to interpret human conditions such as drug addiction, anxiety or
depression has also proven inapplicable. Dr. Malgosia Cegielski is among the
many clinical psychologists who condemn primate use in this context, labeling it
"dark ages" research. Moreover, the use of primates in research presents valid
concerns about animal welfare. Internationally acclaimed primatologist Dr.
Jane Goodall states that primates sustain close family ties and experience a
full range of emotions. Sterile biocontainment facilities draft these socially
complex creatures into lives of solitude. Prematurely weaned babies whimper for
their mothers and slowly go insane--pacing, swaying, ingesting their own waste
and mutilating themselves. At best, their days are bleak, interrupted by the
sudden terror of a cage hose-down or the sharp jab of a needle. These animals
live as numbered specimens inside sunless wards. They undergo invasive
surgeries, electroshock and food/water deprivation. An undercover investigation
inside Cambridge Unit's existing labs exposed technicians under orders to punish
monkeys by withholding food, banging on cages and slamming cage shutters onto
their fingers. Great strides have been made to replace vivisection with
non-animal modalities. Many facilities now fulfill study criterion with in
vitro analysis, cell imaging, epidemiology, computer simulators, videos and
mathematical modeling, genetic and protein analysis, clinical research, human
brain mapping, autopsy/biopsy studies, advanced MRI imaging and other non-animal
research tools. Please do not force more primates to suffer physical and
psychological anguish when so many credible alternatives are accessible.
Thank you for your valuable time and consideration. I
look forward to your feedback.

HUNTING ?
NO THANKS
Source: Argos
On the 13th of September the OIKO
magazine (printed by Kathimerini, one of the most popular Greek newspapers) had
an extended (8 pages) article against hunting. The magazine's cover page was
also an anti-hunting message (attached, it says "Hunting? No, thanks!"). It is
the first time a big Greek newspaper spends so many pages on the anti-hunting
issue, the hunters all over Greece are very angry, threatening everybody and
claiming such articles should not be published! We believe we must show the
magazine and their sponsor (Pireaus Bank) that we are on their side.

We were very happy to hear that your magazine OIKO included an
extended article against hunting. The cover page with the message "Hunting? No,
thanks!" was very inspired and soulful.
We would like to congradulate and
thank you for your effords to stop this mass killing described as a "sport" by
hunters, which effects all of us. Presenting this kind of topics shows your
magazine's high quality and ethics. Please continue to support such issues that
will make our society more humane and compassionate. We are on your

STOP THE BADGER SLAUGHTER
Source: ICABS
ICABS has
produced a “Stop the Badger Snaring Slaughter” postcard aimed at Minister Joe
Walsh who continues to defend his Department’s dubious TB-Eradication Scheme.
The scheme has already left tens of thousands of badgers dead and this massacre
looks set to continue. Please print out the ICABS postcard at www.banbloodsports.com/postcard.pdf
and send it to Minister Walsh. (If you prefer, we can post you out copies of the
postcard). Alternatively, write a letter to the Minister and demand an end to
the snaring of badgers.

Dear
Minister Joe Walsh,
I wish to register my outrage at the slaughter of
tens of thousands of badgers as part of your Department's so-called TB
Eradication Scheme. As you are aware, no scientific evidence exists to
definitively link badgers to the spread of TB. In fact, this cruel experiment
has been described by the UK's National Federation of Badger Groups as
"slaughter masquerading as science". Please immediately halt this unnecessary
and extremely cruel massacre of badgers.

Dear
Sir/Madam, I wish to appeal to you to remove all references to foxhunting
from the Equestrian Sports section of GoIreland.com. Foxhunting is a cruel
and barbaric blood sport which the majority of Irish people wish to see being
made illegal. It is certainly not an activity which should be included in any
promotion of Ireland - indeed, most potential visitors to Ireland would
regard this animal abuse as a blemish on our international image. I hope that
GoIreland.com will follow the good example set recently by Bord Failte’s
equestrian holidays website and remove all references to foxhunting. Thank
you. I look forward to your positive response.

JAPAN
PROTEST AGAINST THE
CONSTRUCTION OF A DOLPHIN HEALING CENTER
Source: www.cetaceadefence.org
In
Sanuki city, Kagawa prefecture, about 500 km southwest from Tokyo,Japan, a plan
to build a big Dolphin Healing Center is progressing. It already experimentally
started with two dolphins from the Taiji drive fisheries a few years ago. A
number of scientists have shown interest in it and started to support the plan.
A citizen- organization(NGO) already started sign-on campaigns to promote this
plan.
1)Sanuki-city keeps three bottlenose dolphins in the sea pen at
present. This plan started by Tsudamachi (name of a town) with two dolphins
from the drive fisheries in Taiji. In January, this year, they brought in
additional three Taiji dolphins, but one of them died in February, and another
female died on August 21, this year.
2)The coastal sea area where the
sea-pen for dolphins was constructed is well known as the place hottest in
summer and coldest in winter, and, accordingly, the temperature of the sea water
extremely rises up in summer, and goes down in winter. The place of the sea pen
is next to the reclaimed land, and often occurs a red tide. The degree of the
transparecy of the water is very low.
3)As mentioned at 2), the
environment of the sea pen is very bad, but the city/people concerned mentioned
that this was an experiment whether dolphins can survive in this environment or
not.
4)As I mentioned at 1), dolphins they keep are from Taiji. If the
plan is promoted, they continue to supply dolphins caught by drive fisheries in
Taiji.
5)It seems that the city itself is not so enthusiastic about this
project. And I heard that GAIATSU, the external pressure, would be very
effective to stop the project just like in Futo, where the drive fishery has
been suspended for three years and dolphin watching started last year. We
think that if we could send many protest letters against the facilities, or
request letters to stop this project, we might be able to make a complete halt
of this project.
6)The city assembly will be opened around September 10,
and this issue will be discussed and the budget for the new fiscal year for this
plan will be decided. (It is needed to make them not to admit this budget,
first.)
5)A group named "Tsuda Dolphin Tomo no Kai"(Friends of Dolphins
in Tsuda) already collected about 10,000 signatures to request to promote the
plan of this Dolphin Healing Center. This group is going to submit them to the
mayor of Sanuki-city around September 10 in time for the city
assembly.
With respect to this issue, the external pressure is very
important. If we could send many letters, faxes or e-mails to the place, we
might be able to stop this project, which will give significant influence on the
future construction of this kind in Japan.
Mayor of Sanuki city, Mr
Shinya Akazawa 5385-8, Shido, Sanuki-shi,Kagawa-ken, 769-2195
JapanFax:+81-87-894-4440 E-mail: hisyo@m.sanuki.ne.jp
Dear
Sir
I have recently learnt of the proposal in your city to build a
'dolphin healing centre'. The dolphins which will be kept there will come from
the drive fishery industry (where dolphins are brutally herded by boats and
nets, most being killed and processed into meat and a few kept alive to be sold
into captivity). The dolphins currently held at Sanuki city as an experiment in
this business scheme (also called' healing centre'), all originate from dolphin
drives.
There are many reasons to reject the plans for a dolphin captive
'healing centre'. The most important is the consideration that there is a
growing international awareness and consciousness ( which is also growing
in Japan ) to protect dolphins. People rightly believe our species should
leave them in the wild and we should visit them only on their terms. We
should not abuse them by capture and distort their psychology and physiology.
Dolphins have existed in the eco-system and roamed free for millions of years,
long before man evolved from the trees and caves and chose to dominate rather
than have dominion. As the top predator in the seas, dolphins have only
relatively recently learnt to fear the violence and greed of man. In ancient
Greece dolphins were revered and protected. It was punishable in Greek society
by death to kill one. In the UK dolphins are protected IN LAW from capture,
killing AND by deliberate harassment from people and boats!
At Futo in
Japan there is a former dolphin killer (Izumi Ishii) who is leading people in
boat trips to see dolphins in their natural habitat. That MUST be the way of
the future in Japan and elsewhere. Please consider this fact when you decide on
a dolphin 'healing centre'. Please reject it.
It is with regret that I
have to inform you that in the UK and elsewhere the Japanese nation is held in
very low esteem for the killing of whales and dolphins. Please show the world
that attitudes to dolphins and whales are changing in Japan. Dolphins face many
threats to their future survival, namely capture for dolphinariums and 'healing
centres', being killed in drives and entangled in fishing nets. The very oceans
they must live in are a lethal cocktail of man- made- industrialised
contaminants. One Japanese man, Izumi Ishii, showed it is possible to change
from a dolphin killer to a dolphin conservationist. The world asks the question,
can the nation of Japan?

STOP THE
PRODUCTION OF PREMARIN

In solidarity with the Women's Health and Ethics Coalition, we the
undersigned oppose the manufacture and exportation of Premarin® PremPro®
andPremPhase® and call for a stop to the production of the Premarinfamily of
drug products. We ask the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the American
MedicalAssociation, the Ministry of Health(Canada), and the Canadian
MedicalAssociation to take the initiative in ending 60 years of misinformation
andcorporate profiteering that has proven damaging to women, animals, and
theenvironment. We demand that our governmental regulatory agencies begranted
the resources they require in order to protect the public from the effects of
shrewd marketing techniques by drug companies, and that themedical community be
provided with factual, scientific information regardingpharmaceutical products.
It is imperativethat this information iscollected from unbiased sources that
have no significant financial ties to the pharmaceutical industry. Our specific
concerns are detailed below.WOMEN'S HEALTHWyeth, a global pharmaceutical
company, has marketed Premarin since 1942 asa treatment for certain effects of
menopause. In 2002, the United StatesNational Institutes of Health (NIH) halted
a study on theHormone-Replacement Therapy (HRT) drug Prempro due to an increased
incidenceof life-threatening diseases among participating women. Yet Wyeth
continuesto market the drug even though it is linked to health hazards such as
breastcancer, heart disease, blood clots, strokes, ovarian cancer, and
dementia. While sales have dropped in North America, Wyeth is marketing the
Premarinbrands Premelle and Premelle Cycle in India, China and other nations
whereuninformed consumers can easily be misled by professional
advertisingstrategies. Since both these drugs include a combination of Premarin
(equineestrogen) and progestin (synthetic progesterone), the health of women in
these countries is at risk.Six decades of misinforming women and their doctors
is enough. The worldwidemarketing of all Premarin-based drugs must stop.ANIMAL
WELFAREAs its name implies, Premarin is made from Pregnant Mares' Urine. In
order to collect the urine, 35,000 to 40,000 mares are kept pregnant year
afteryear, tied in stalls for six months at a time, connected to
urine-collecting devices. During this time they can take a step forward or
backward, or side to side, but they cannot turn around, scratch an itch on their
rump, or roll in the dirt. Unable to lie flat out, they cannot enter into a deep
sleep.Such cramped confinement often leads to stress, disease and lameness. This
unnatural existence goes on all winter as the immobilized mares become heavy
with foal. The foals born to the mares in spring are sent to auction in early
fall. Thevast majority of them are loaded into cattle carriers for the trip to
meat packers' feed lots. Some are purchased by equine rescue groups or
byperformance horse buyers and a few might stay back at the farm to replenish
the stock. But the majority, before they reach their first birthday, end up as
dinner on the plates of the Japanese, Belgians, French, Italians,Germans, Dutch
and Swiss, a protein source considered all the more valuable in light of recent
cullings of European livestock due to the spread of Mad Cow and foot-and-mouth
disease.Six decades of exploitation of the mares and their foals is
enough. The production of Premarin must stop.THE ENVIRONMENTEffluent from a
Wyeth processing plant flows into a sewage-lagoon system in Brandon, Manitoba
-- where Wyeth produces most of its Premarin -- raising concerns about
pollutants entering the Assiniboine River near that city.Six decades of
pollution is enough. Wyeth must stop polluting the waters and land where the
urine is processedand clean up the environmental damage that has been
done.CORPORATE PROFITEERINGWyeth has worked hard to ensure that women suffering
from the symptoms of menopause start and stay on a regimen of HRT drugs. The
company has poured millions of dollars into advertising and has hired the
world's largest public relations firm, Burson-Marsteler. Over the years, they
have financed thousands of studies, but most of these studies, until the recent
NIH study, were observational, which by definition are weak and biased.Every
year that Premarin-brand drugs remain on the market, Wyeth makes about $1
billion. Today the Premarin family of drugs is patented under more than 30 brand
names and marketed in approximately 60 countries worldwide.Wyeth's vigorous
promotion of HRT for 60 years, using questionable science to back up many of
their claims, is unjustifiable and demands accountability. Clearly the need for
these drugs has not created profit butinstead profit has created the need.
Menopause is not a disease.
